In Tanzania’s Morogoro Region, the Kilombero Valley lies at the foot of the lush, wildlife-rich Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Here, Kokoa Kamili partners with smallholder farmers to produce some of the finest cacao in the country.
Founded by former international development professionals disillusioned with top-down aid models, Kokoa Kamili was built on a different philosophy—one rooted in empowerment and equity. Rather than dictating terms, the company pays farmers roughly 25% more than the national average, giving them the freedom and means to reinvest in their farms, families, and futures.
But fair pricing is only part of the story. Kokoa Kamili also distributes free or subsidized seedlings and offers hands-on training to boost yields and improve quality. The result is cacao known for its bright, fruit-forward flavor profile—notes of red berries, apple, plum, and tropical fruits balanced by woody undertones and subtle hints of chocolate and brownie batter.
The word Kamili means “Exactly” or “Absolutely” in Swahili—a reflection of the company’s values: precision, transparency, and integrity. It’s a commitment to farmers and chocolate makers alike that every step of the process is carried out with care and purpose.
